Shemini Atzeres Night

Shemini Atzeres Night — Kids Hakafa and 12 Pesukim

The children lead off the hakafos, circling the bimah with their flags and proclaiming the Twelve Pesukim, the verses and sayings of Chazal the Rebbe chose for every Jewish child to know by heart. This honor carries the merit of the children's pure joy with the Torah, the foundation on which the whole celebration stands.

Shemini Atzeres Night — Ata Horeisa 1

Ata Horeisa, "You have been shown, to know that Hashem is G-d, there is none besides Him" (Devarim 4:35), opens the hakafos. In Chabad custom the verses are recited three times, and the one honored leads each round verse by verse with the whole congregation answering. This is the first round.

Shemini Atzeres Night — Ata Horeisa 2

The second round of Ata Horeisa. The verses proclaim Hashem's kingship, ask that He be with us as He was with our fathers, and that the Torah go out from Zion, said aloud together before the Sifrei Torah leave the Ark.

Shemini Atzeres Night — Vehaya Zaracha

"Your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread out west and east, north and south, and through you and your descendants all the families of the earth shall be blessed" (Bereishis 28:14), Hashem's promise to Yaakov, recited before the hakafos. Its word U'faratzta, "you shall spread out," became the Rebbe's call for Yiddishkeit to burst every boundary. The honor carries the blessing of children and of growth without limit.

Shemini Atzeres Night — Hakafa 1 (Rebbe's Hakafa)

Chabad custom, following the Arizal, is to celebrate a full seven hakafos on the night of Shemini Atzeres as well as on Simchas Torah. The first hakafah is the Rebbe's hakafah. In Chabad shuls the first and seventh hakafos are set aside in the Rebbe's honor, as they were at 770: the one who acquires it dedicates the hakafah to the Rebbe and leads it in his name, opening the circuits of the Sifrei Torah around the bimah with "Ana Hashem hoshia na, Ana Hashem hatzlicha na, Ana Hashem aneinu b'yom kareinu."

The one who acquires it dedicates it to the Rebbe and leads the last circuit before the Sifrei Torah are returned to the Ark.

Shemini Atzeres Day — Pesicha

Opening the Ark for Krias HaTorah opens the Gateway to Heaven and lets its holiness shine forth on the congregation. This honor is also a segulah for new beginnings, for an easy, healthy, and swift birth, and for any new venture or personal contribution a person is hoping to bring into the world. And just as the Torah scroll is taken out and soon returned, this is also a segulah for one's investments and ventures put out into the world, that they should return full circle, with increase and blessing.

Devarim 14:22-29, Aser te'aser: the mitzvah of maaser, eaten in Yerushalayim in the years of maaser sheini and given to the Levi, the convert, the orphan and the widow in the years of maaser ani, "so that Hashem your G-d will bless you in all the work of your hands." The Sages read it as aser bishvil shetisasher, tithe so that you become wealthy; the honor carries that blessing of parnassah. May be given to a Kohen or purchased on behalf of one.

The Haftorah (Melachim I 8:54-66) is Shlomo's blessing at the dedication of the Beis HaMikdash, from which the people went home on the eighth day "joyful and good of heart."

The piyut asks for water in the merit of Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, Moshe, Aharon and the twelve tribes; the honor of opening the Ark carries the merit of the year's sustenance.

Simchas Torah Day — Chamishi / Kol HaNe’arim

Chamishi (Devarim 33:22-26) is read again and again on Simchas Torah until every man has been called to the Torah, and then all the children who are not yet bar mitzvah are called up together under a spread tallis for Kol HaNe'arim, "Me'onah Elokei kedem," with the one honored saying the brachos beside them. The congregation blesses them with Yaakov's words, "HaMalach hagoel osi." The honor carries the merit of the children, whom Hashem accepted as guarantors for the Torah.

Simchas Torah Day — Choson Torah

Choson Torah, the bridegroom of the Torah, is called to its closing verses (Devarim 34:1-12): Moshe ascends Har Nevo, sees the whole land, and passes away "by the mouth of Hashem," and "no prophet arose again in Israel like Moshe." The reader completes the Torah, the congregation calls out Chazak, and the year's reading is sealed. Everything follows the conclusion: this is among the greatest honors of the year.
